The rain came down in sheets the day that Ali’s family was moving. She was watching out the hotel window as Dane and a few of her closest friends went towards the main entrance. She was dreading this moment and had been dreading it for a long time. Her heart beat quickened and she waited for the knock. When it came her father answered the door and let them in. He left then to take some things out to the car, which they’d be driving all the way to Pennsylvania with their pet cat Pink.
“OH I’ll miss you so much Ali,” one of the girls cried out as Ali was bombarded by the three that had come.
“I’ll miss you too guys,” Ali said with a meek smile trying to hide the fact that all the words only made her feel worse.
“Do me a favour,” Dane said after a moment. “Make as many friends as you can down there and enjoy yourself.”
He was sincere in his words though they had been whispered so the others wouldn’t hear them. Ali was a bit shocked at first but agreed to it though she doubted the ability to do this. It was a few moments later that her father came back in to collect some more things. He sensed the strain between the friends and he flashed Ali a sympathetic look that was more for an apology for forcing her to go through with this just before high school.
“You guys,” Ali said after her father had left, with tears on the verge of falling. “I’m going to mis you all so much. I’m going to try as hard as I can to visit you when I can!”
Her words were sincere but one of her friends glanced towards Dane unintentionally giving away something she disliked, a gut feeling that these friendships would never last. She was fearing now what she never imagined that she would ever fear. She was afraid one of her closest friends would commit the worst betrayal possible and steal Dane. Her stomach did a flip as she looked pleadingly at Dane who hadn’t notice this glance.
They left a few minutes later as her father came in to collect the last bags. He noticed the increased distressed in Ali and he opened his mouth to implore but shut it in fear of ‘intruding’ on his teenage daughter’s private time or space. The last bags were picked up and hauled out to the car. He paused the just outside the door to wait for Ali. She followed him out unwillingly and glanced at him before going down the hall.
Stopping a few moments later she turned to speak, “Father, I think its unreasonable that we’re moving and its just for your own selfish good.”
“You know I’m doing this to get a raise and be able to get better college funds for you,” he said gently.
“College? I’m not thinking about college! I’m thinking about whether or not I’ll be able to have friends to sit with during lunch. I’m scared that I’ll only being sitting at home alone for the rest of my life and I won’t have anything to do.”
“You can always make new friends, sweetie!”
“New friends? Right! As if they’d want to talk to a suburban, midwest girl with the traditional scandenavian blue eyes and blonde hair?”
There was silence then after she finalized her statement and her father was a bit struck at first but decided it would be best if he didn’t say any more. It was strained for the rest of the day as they drove through Wisconsin to the state’s southern border.
Author’s Note: Well hello! It’s Eva again just stopping by to see Good afternoon/night/morning or whatever time of the day it is. I know that it seems like I’ll be posting a lot right now but I guarantee there will be days when i won’t have the chance to update at all.
Word of the day: tetrad
Fact of the day: Should there be a crash, Prince Charles and Prince William never travel on the same airplane as a precaution!
